Laser eye surgery healing process: how long does it take?

All eyes have a different response to healing after laser eye surgery. Therefore, predicting how fast laser eye surgery healing will happen or how laser treatment will affect your final vision is almost impossible. Also, having your eyes corrected to perfect 20/20 vision is not a reasonable expectation for laser eye surgery effects, and should not be encouraged.

Predicting the healing after laser eye treatment is easier with patients who are undergoing LASIK surgery, because eye’s surface is not touched by the excimer laser during the procedure. On the other hand, for patients having PRK surgery an accurate preoperative prediction is more difficult, as the surface of the eye is directly involved in the laser eye surgery healing process.

In the majority of cases, the vision of patients sharpens during the first part of laser eye surgery healing. A minor tendency for the treated eye to regress toward its initial state is common in the first few weeks and months during recovery after laser eye treatment. For instance, short sighted eyes might relapse slightly toward short sightedness, whereas long sighted eyes might revert mildly toward long sightedness. For this reason, a surgeon might decide to slightly over correct the eye during the operation. On the contrary, cases of under correction are infrequent, and can be easily improved with a repetition of the laser eye surgery procedure.

For the first four to six months after surgery, exposing the eyes to ultraviolet light such as that from the sun or a tanning salon is not advisable, as this might cause some patients to experience regression. During this time patients are generally advised to wear sunglasses at all times when in the sun in order to protect their eyes. All activities that involve ultraviolet exposure, such as skiing, must be avoided for a few weeks after treatment. Moreover, protecting the eyes and the retina from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light is always good practice, even for those who have not undergone laser eye surgery.

Healing differences can significantly affect the outcome of laser eye surgery. Therefore you should choose with care the doctor who performs your operation and monitors your healing process. For best results, make sure the doctor reviews the post operative instructions with you prior to surgery, and follow them carefully to avoid any complications during laser eye surgery healing.
